The leafy sea dragon. One of this planet’s more fascinating, exquisite creatures. I took this picture at the Monterey Aquarium last month. Could have stared at this being for hours. I was brought quietly, over and over, to the present moment. There was only my breathing in and out, and this floating fish with its ingenious design—form, structure and color all conspiring to protect it from predators in the ocean, but also bringing a silent sense of awe to random human observers like me, watching with reverence in this artificial habitat.
I wonder if I’ll ever be able to see myself (or other human beings) with the same nonjudgmental wonder that I feel when I’m watching the leafy sea dragon. It’s something to think about, for sure.
