Saw an incredible documentary the other night, on PBS, about the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. A timely broadcast, if there ever was one. The horrific deaths of these women were among the elements that sealed the deal for unions to come into greater strength in our country. It’s a little eery, given the fact that I’m almost four years into the work on our new musical, “Rebel Girls,” which is a story set in about the same time frame (1912), about another historical event in Lawrence, Massachusetts—28,000 textile workers went on strike (many of them spoke no English—51 languages in the mix), and made it stick.
United we stand.
